How do you achieve difficult goals?

Whether it be within our personal or work lives, we have all faced challenges that are seemingly unbeatable.

In this project, I take a look at how we can make sobriety goals more achievable.

Problem

People don't seek help for substance misuse.

According to the National Institute of Health*, in 2022, over 22.4 million Americans were diagnosed with substance misuse disorder (SMD) and only 10.4% sought treatment.

Solution

How might we make achieving sobriety goals easier?

1. Peer Accountability

Research shows that having accountability partners makes individuals 95% more likely to achieve a goal.

2. Goal Tracking

Being able to track progress on a goal helps motivate individuals

After iterating through ideas of a smart watch app, fitbit design, or mobile app, I decided that a mobile app would be the best fit to help users achieve sobriety goals.

This was chosen because people are accustomed to communicating with others through their phone and the app can be accessible to more people with a mobile smart device.

Background

So why aren't people getting help?

I conducted a survey with 36 users that had varying levels of substance abuse. Some noteworthy statistics are:

  • 72.2% have tried becoming sober, most citing health reasons, but only 41.6% have set a sobriety goal.
  • 85.3% are around people that misuse the same substances

Here are two scenarios based on the survey:

1. "All of my friends drink and vape too."

Connecting with others on CleanPath can help individuals gain more motivation and a different perspective on substance misuse.

2. "I want to be healthier, but I can't stop smoking."

Tracking their substance misuse can help individuals better understand and tackle their habits.

Competitive Audit

The competition lacked features that kept users accountable towards their goals.

The current app will provide customized goals, progress tracking, and goal accountability between users. These added feature aims to address goal drop off rate and motivation.

Persona: The Social Drinker

"I only drink on the weekends!"

Jason is a consultant who started using substances in college. He says he only drinks on weekends, but drinks around 4-5 times a week. He wants to be healthier, but finds it hard without any support. CleanPath would help Jason stay accountable and track his sobriety goals

Goals

  • Finding a way to cut down on his substance use
  • Meeting others who can support his goals

Pain Points

  • All his friends misuse the same substances
  • Doesn't feel motivation to achieve his substance goals

User Journey

Mapping the journey from start to finish

Before I begin designing, mapping out the main user flows and smaller user flows helps me understand the user experience in its entirety. Below is a simplified user flow of the 3 main actions on CleanPath.

Wireframing serves as a blueprint for the final project, allows me to create iterations quickly, and aids in understanding whether the layouts are user friendly.

Usability Study

Let's put it to the test!

Five users were shown a low fidelity prototype and tasked with creating an account and making a post. The affinity map below shows the results from the usability study sorted into common topics.

Each color coordinates to a specific participant.

Result: 2 Major Improvements

1. Show, Don't Tell

40% of users questioned if only the current month was available for reservation. The final version allows users to reserve a date up to 2 months ahead, in order to find a day that suits their schedule.

2. Reducing the Learning Curve

After creating an account, some users were confused what to do first. Implementing a tutorial for new users help combat this confusion and guide users on what actions to take. This aims to improve user retention rates by decreasing the learning curve.

Onboarding

Tutorial + Home Screen

The onboarding user flow aims to be as streamlined, trustworthy, and nonjudgmental as possible.

The goal of the tutorial + home page userflow is to show new users how the app can help them achieve their goals.

Takeaways

Sensitive Topics Require More Research

Although many people around me face substance use issues, I still wanted to conduct extensive preliminary research given how sensitive this topic is. The research results, using both my own survey and scientific studies, were nothing short of eye-opening. This process ensured I was using scientific research to back up my designs, rather than my experiences and biases.

Using Neutral Language

Because substance misuse is a sensitive topic, I had to pay special attention to use neutral language when writing both my user interviews and surveys. This was to ensure the word choice of questions did not influence the participants' answers.
Additionally, I had to be aware of social desirability bias when looking at the responses.

Next Steps

The next steps would be to measure the user retention rates on the onboarding and tutorial to make improvements to both user flows.
